Three Interludes for Wind Quintet First Edition flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon Catalogue Number: HV007 Duration: approx. 11 minutes Skill level (A-E): E Examples: (Audio generated by Sibelius/NotePerformer) "This music flowed from a romance which blossomed between myself and my young
wife-to-be. Together with three student friends we had formed a wind quintet who gave the first performance at the
Southampton Library & Art Gallery in the summer of 1970. Graham Sheen (our bassoonist) went on to become principal
bassoon with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also formed the London Wind Quintet who, in 1975, performed these "Three
Interludes" at the Purcell Rooms (on London's South Bank) and broadcast them on a BBC Radio 3 programme. At the time of
writing such 'tonal' music was deemed 'backward-looking' and almost 'decadent'. Fortunately, in these more enlightened times,
melody and sincerely expressed emotion are back on the musical agenda. Suffice to say we are both thrilled to see these
"Interludes" in print albeit 30 years after that romantic first performance."John Frith What people say ... "Work is challenging, contemporary, tuneful,
accessible."TrevCo-Varner Music "It's good to see the Three Interludes for Wind Quintet in print at last. I was
privileged to have played in the première, and early broadcasts of this lovely work. Each movement has an exuberance that is
hard to resist. Although a youthful work, it has a vibrancy and clarity that still seem fresh. It is beautifully written for
the instruments, and the colours and textures in this somewhat diverse medium are brilliantly realised."Graham Sheen |
