This is the first of a set of 5 trios written between 1937 and 1947. The date on the manuscript reads "October 31st 1937". The composer indicated that the flute could be replaced with oboe and produced an alternative part which is supplied with this edition.

The style of these trios would be best summed up as "in the classical style" but are nonetheless great fun and make ideal teaching pieces for intermediate grade players.
