John Frith writes: I discovered this wonderful poem as a teenage music student at Dartington College of Arts in Devon. Our choir were rehearsing Benjamin Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb" which is a choral setting of words by Christopher Smart which describe the antics of his cat 'Jeoffry'. I found its timeless humour and delight in all things feline both disarming and contemporary.

Having written only a few bars of the first movement of this trio I began to hear faint echoes of some almost forgotten stanzas and rushed to find Christopher Smart's original poem from which I have extracted a few relevant lines to prefix each of the movements. I believe the wind parts are challenging but rewarding to play and trust that, in performance, the audience will perceive my great delight in creating this music.
